Letter to Stefan G. Bucher

                                                                   Dear Mr. Bucher
Stefan Bucher and his Monster friend

I have been following your work for a while after I was exposed to the video presentation of yours in the AIGA Design Conference (2009), where you talked about all the work you did, including the monster book. I absolutely love your style and love how you used ink and markers to do the monsters. It is amazing how they became associated with certain things. It actually highly inspires me and helps me not be held back when I am doing the things I do. The way you incorporate humor in your work, is quite fantastic because, as I figured, it is not that easy. It is very inspirational that you have managed to put together all your skills in that presentation. I loved the video in the beginning where you put together all the bits and pieces of your life. Makes me want to do one. The nerdy stuff and the typography is great! I used to do some ink drawings in high school but got bored and started doing massive wood sculptures; most of them were at least 4 feet.

As a graphic design student, I find myself quite out of place at times when I have to do freelance design. There are so many clients who like to give hell, it is unbelievable. But When I see designers like you succeed despite all this, it really helps and boosts up my confidence level, because it makes me realize that, this is how it is and one day, I will make it too. I have been advised to stay away from freelancing, but I would really hate to not be able to choose my clients. At the end of the day, I just LOVE what I do (even when I am sick!) Thank you for all the great tips and ideas, especially for the young designers like us – we need it! And more.

Sincerely
Taskia

Design is...essay

Design is a tool that helps personal, social and environmental growth. It is growing communication that affects everything around us creating a greater impact on everything we see and everything we think about. Growth does not only mean coming up with new ideas or new thinking; it means to have the realization to be great in any areas of design. The only way one can be great is when one makes his or her design work personal, because I believe making the work personal can only lead to growth of everything else, even if it is done for somebody else.  When we look at designers like Marian Banjtes and Stefan Sagmeister, all their work speaks out to the world because they made it personal, and hence, their work lead to personal, social and environmental growth. Marian talks about her work in the Ted video, she speaks about how her work excels as she makes it her own rather than somebody else’s. When we look at Stefen Sagmeister’s work, we look at the dynamics of his work that speaks everything about social, personal and environmental growth. How does one make design personal? Because design is in the details (Hamid). Our eye will influence our minds to grow when we observe the details and observing will make ones work personal and when it becomes personal, it leads to growth for everyone. Kathrine McCoy had said that when working she has emphasized the emotion, self-expression and multiplicity of meaning that cannot be controlled within the clients message (14). This shows how important it is for a designer to make his or her work personal for it to grow and communicate it to the world. A great designers motto should be to change the world (19) with their eye as a designer to help their growth. But now, every designer can do everything with the help of rapidly advancing technology. Vivan Ducas, the other the in our package designing class had said that in her time when she was working, every designer was known for their department of speciality that they mastered in, and now, every designer is known to be a general designer. But as far as I think, slowly the design community is going back to its basics, where they are gaining knowledge and thirst for having their own special quality that they can be known for. Nowadays, more and more designers are taking up personal projects, and I believe that this will help them realize that these personal projects that they take, they not only help them as a designer, for also help them grow as a person and help them develop our society and environment to a new degree. When the design is personal, designers can put new ideas and concepts on the table. When it is personal it changes the way we live, as it slowly starts to open our mind to endless possibilities that were never experimented with.

Self realization during flood-week..or not

Hours spent on technology
After having the F building closed in school for almost a week, I realized how much time is spent on almost doing nothing. Well, except for depending on any sort of media to help our time go faster. Here is a graph of how I spent my week.

Design is a strategy without which design is just art.

Self Intro

Hi
My name is Taskia Azam and I am doing my Graphic Design course in Humber College. I started off with Design Foundation in the North Campus, so this is basically my 3rd year in this school. I graduate next year and am looking forward to embracing the world of graphic design with enthusiasm. I live with my family and even though they are not quite sure what I really do, they are super supportive. I speak seven different languages and I have been to at least 13 different countries. I am looking forward to what this course may bring to the table.

Cheers.
